- Second Kerala Legislative Assembly Election held on 1st February 1960.
- Indian National Congress became the largest party with 63 seats in the assembly after the elections.
- Communists became the second largest part with the seat of 26
- Praja Socialist Part (PSP) got 20 seats.
- Indian National Congress and Praja Socialist Party formed a coalition government, with Patttam A Thanuu Pillai of Praja Socialitst Party as the Chief Minister, and R.Shankar from Congress as the Deputy Chief Minister.
- Even though Praja Socialist Party was a junior partner in the coalition, Pattam Thanupillai was chosen as the Chief Minster because the congress leader R.Sankar was from Ezhava caste which the Nair Service Society, the main supporter of Indian National Congress, disappointed of Pattom A Thanupillai previously held the posts of Prime Minister in the erstwhile Travaancore state, and later the Chief Minister of Travancore-Cochiin state.
- Pattom Thanupillai resiged in 26 September 1962 when he was posted as the Governer of Punjab. This paved the way for the first Congress Chief Minster in Kerala under R.Sankar.
- R.Sankar remained as the Chief Minister of Kerala from 26 September 1962 to 10 September 1964.
- R.Saankar had to resign when a No-confidence motion was passed in the Assembly.
